6 easy ways to update your home in a weekend

Never underestimate the power of a weekend update. Let me share with you some savvy makeover changes you can achieve that involve, yes, a little bit of elbow grease but minimal costs – and will give your home an amazing update in the minimum amount of time.

1. Prep up your pots

A couple of tins of spray paint on an old terracotta or ceramic pot will instantly refresh any pot plant. Group pots of different sizes together for maximum impact.

2. Paint a room white

Lighten and brighten a room in less than a day! The Dulux range of paints has a huge selection of ‘whites’. Talk to a painting professional, they will need to know the size of the room, which way the room is facing and how much natural light it gets. They can then advise whether you will require a cool or warm white tone. Going white promises to revitalise and open up any room.

3. Create a warmer welcome

Repaint your front door, add a new doormat, a large porch light, plus your newly painted pot plants and your visitors will be overwhelmed with the warm and friendly greeting they receive as they approach your house.

4. Revamp your home office

Some simple decorative touches to your study will make your working environment so much more enjoyable. Add a colourful task lamp. A couple of healthy plants will also oxygenate the space. Maybe you are lacking in some well-designed storage? Measure the space, draw a plan including the current furniture, then head off to Ikea to find that piece that will help you keep your working materials in an orderly fashion. If you are going to re-paint your study try to stay with calming soft greens and blue-greys.

5. Makeover in the bedroom

Your bedroom is a place of rest and relaxation, so ensure you give it a lot of love. Calming coloured linen sheets and doona cover in duck blue, soft green or beige with a muted throw for those colder nights are all very soothing and inviting. Clutter in the bedroom does not induce sleep, a lamp and a couple of books are the only items you need on your bedside table. Keep the other bits and pieces in a drawer or cupboard.

6. Modernise your bathroom

A full renovation is horrendously expensive but you can make simple alterations to an ageing bathroom at a much-reduced cost. Modernise the tapware and cupboard door handles, whether your choice is gleaming chrome or trendy black, keep the same style and colour, it is not a time to mix and match. As with your bedroom, there is no place for clutter here, so keep those cosmetic products behind the cabinet doors. Complete the new luxurious look with soft fluffy towels, a small stool, and some beautiful smelling oils
