Did you know the ceiling represents one-sixth of the space in a room? And that designers call it the ‘fifth ‘wall because of the impact it can have on decorating a room?
Yet most of us have never really looked to the ceiling when it comes to choosing paint colours, thinking the only option is to paint it white.
After you have taken into consideration the natural light and the height of your ceiling, however, you might realise you’re missing an opportunity to add excitement and drama to a room.
Here are a few tips for you if you’re now wondering about the options open to you when it comes to painting your ceiling.
1. MATCHING THE WALLS AND CEILINGS
Painting the ceiling the same colour as the rest of the room creates a rich and full atmosphere that feels ‘complete’.
It creates a nonstop flow of colour that’s very soothing to the eye. This works particularly well if a room is asymmetrical or has a vaulted or angled ceiling – continuing the wall colour through the ceiling can simplify the shape and help unify the room.
2.SLIGHT VARIATION OF CEILING COLOUR TO THE WALL COLOR
A slightly different strategy involves altering the ceiling colour to be several shades darker or lighter that the walls. You still get the relaxed feel of the unified colour, but now you’ve added a touch more depth and dimension.
Since ceilings have a tendency to look darker than walls, try a shade or two lighter, this will give a distinctive feel to the room.
3. DIFFERENT CEILING COLOUR ENTIRELY
Painting the ceiling a totally different, or contrasting, colour adds character and interest. A brightly coloured ceiling, with stark white walls makes a strong and striking statement.
Ceiling paint finish is usually flat but you can also use a satin finish which will show a trace of reflective sheen. (One caveat: you need a very unblemished ceiling in order to pull this one off!)
4. MAKE YOUR ‘ACCENT WALL’ THE CEILING
If you are considering painting all the internal walls why not consider a neutral colour throughout. With a consistent soft hue throughout the house, a pop of colour on that beautiful old lounge room ceiling or that lofty stately hallway will definitely give the wow factor. Don’t forget to take into consideration your furnishings, including rugs, artwork and furniture and choose a colour that complements them.
AND HERE ARE SOME DON’TS
While higher ceilings cry out for creative treatments and can handle bold colours and designs – the opposite is true for low ceilings. Stay with white paint for these as this will create a feeling of space/make the ceiling seem more elevated.
Also, check the room you’re painting doesn’t have a super-strong focal point already. A striking kitchen splashback or a dining area with a grand dining table will always catch one’s eyes before anything else. If you highlight the ceiling as well this could add a little confusion on what to focus on first.
