Have you always fancied the casual, beachy and elegant American Hampton style home but thought it would be too costly to replicate? These five simple changes can give your home the Hampton sophistication without breaking the budget.
1. Natural light
We are very lucky in Australia as most of our homes have abundance of glass and natural light which is a core element of a Hampton-style home. If you do have a room which is a little dark, don’t despair, installing a few downlights will make a big difference.
2. Use light colours
Hampton décor combines lots of natural light, soft whites and beiges on the walls and sofas. Adding a linen or white cotton slip cover on a sofa, is very easy and cost-effective way of achieving the muted décor. Slip covers are available in a range of shapes and sizes – Ikea is good place to start looking. Don’t forget the scatter cushions. Teal, blue, grey white or beige cushions will look amazing.
3. Furniture (light wood or white)
Natural light wood (oak and mango) mixed in with white painted furniture has such a great beachy feel. A few modest furniture changes can make a major difference to any room. Check out garage sales, the old story of another person’s trash being someone else’s treasure, is so very true.
4. Include natural elements
Fresh or artificial ‘WHITE’ flowers in a glass vase is the Hampton home signature. Go with anything coastal, displaying driftwood/shells, wall art with water and boats scenes. Add either a natural jute or light-coloured carpet rug, always keep it simple.
5. Light fittings
If you have anything left in the budget a few light fitting changes can contribute to the Hampton feel. Maybe a modern chandelier in the family room, or ceiling pendants over your kitchen bench. Cane or rattan pendants are reasonably priced, and they will fit perfectly into the new stylish theme. Search online for bargains, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on lighting choices.
