A major painting project is about more than applying a fresh coat of paint. It requires careful preparation, quality products and experienced tradespeople who understand how to deliver a lasting finish across a complex property.
AJ Cochrane & Sons recently completed a full internal and external repaint of the Ben Roberts-Smith VC, MG Beach Houses in Perth, helping transform the property as it was prepared to provide accommodation for homeless veterans.
The Scarborough apartment complex was purchased by Mrs Gina Rinehart AO and Hancock Prospecting before being repurposed as part of Hancock Prospecting’s $200 million veteran housing commitment to support Australian veterans through the delivery of secure housing.
Named in honour of Ben Roberts-Smith VC, MG, the initiative provides accommodation for veterans experiencing homelessness, recognising the contribution of those who have served Australia and helping create safe and stable housing opportunities.
A Complete Repaint From Roof To Interior
AJ Cochrane & Sons, commercial painters in Perth, were proud to contribute to the transformation of the property through a complete repaint, helping prepare the building for its important new purpose. The project involved a full refurbishment of the property’s painted surfaces, including:
- Full external painting of the complex
- Complete internal painting
- Roof painting and protective coating application
The works were completed in two stages over approximately four months, with an average team of three painters and one apprentice working across the project. Approximately 1,700 litres of paint were used during the project to achieve a durable, high-quality finish across the property.
Selecting the right coatings for long-term performance
Commercial repainting projects require more than simply changing the appearance of a building. Coatings must provide durability, protection, and a finish suited to the environment.
For the interior areas, AJ Cochrane & Sons used:
- Dulux Ceiling Flat for ceilings
- Dulux Wash & Wear Low Sheen for walls
- Dulux Aqua Enamel for door frames
For the exterior, the team applied:
- Dulux AcraShield Matt to external walls
- Dulux AcraShield Roof Membrane to the roof
- Dulux Weathershield Low Sheen to external areas
Before painting commenced, all external surfaces were thoroughly cleaned and washed before being sealed in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
Delivering a safe and professional project
Large-scale painting projects require careful planning, particularly when working across multiple areas of a property. Scaffolding was supplied and installed by Oldfield Scaffold Solutions, providing safe access for the team while completing external painting and roof works.
The roof was sprayed while the scaffolding was erected, allowing the team to achieve an even and consistent finish while maintaining a safe working environment throughout the project. Although the property was not operating as a public facility during the works, AJ Cochrane & Sons took all necessary precautions to protect the surrounding areas and complete the project efficiently.
