Project Overview
The team at A.J. Cochrane & Sons were approached to undertake repainting at St Columba’s Catholic Church. Located in Bayswater and led by the Reverend Father Mark Ross Payton, St Columba’s is part of a wider school community. The goal was to give the heritage-listed church and hall a much-needed painting renovation.
The Challenges
St Columba’s parish community is an active one, so the key challenge was to meticulously plan the project to minimise disruptions. This meant factoring in worship times and other parish events. Works were scheduled for the beginning of 2026 during the quieter holiday period and before the new school year began. The Parish was eager to complete the project before the Lenten program started, so keeping the project on schedule was vital.
Additionally, St Columba’s is a place of worship, so careful consideration of paint colour and design was needed to reflect the reverence of the space and create a welcoming environment for spiritual contemplation.
The Solution
AJ Cochrane & Sons began the project with a comprehensive colour consultation to identify the interior paint shades that best suited the space. In addition to creating a light and spacious atmosphere, the colour palette needed to encourage quiet reflection and complement St Columba’s existing design.
Colours deemed unsuitable for a worship space were immediately ruled out. Brighter colours were appropriate for the church’s social areas, but a peaceful atmosphere for prayer was required for the sanctuary and nave.
We wanted to highlight St Columba’s stunning architectural features while also ensuring the space felt open and welcoming. This was achieved with the use of a clean white paint on the walls and vaulted ceiling, and a neutral light grey for the arches and columns, to create a striking visual contrast that would blend harmoniously with the existing colour scheme. This fresh and inviting refurbishment worked cohesively with the different colours and textures within the space, including the stunning marble flooring, a granite feature wall behind the altar, and the timber pews.
Church volunteers ensured all statues, stations and other items were put into storage ahead of repainting, allowing the project to proceed without delay. Painting works were scheduled for early morning starts to minimise disruptions, and at the completion of each day, we ensured the worksite was clean and tidy for the safety of parishioners. Weekday mass services were suspended for the duration of the project, but the schedule was carefully planned to allow weekend mass to continue.
The Final Result
A modern and bright church transformation that warmly welcomes parishioners whilst retaining the appropriate reverence and tranquillity of the space. The highest quality Dulux paint products ensure the St Columba’s community will enjoy the revitalised space for many years to come.
