Interior Decorating Mistakes (and how to avoid them)

Interior Decorating Mistakes - How to Avoid

Painting can be a great way to update the interior of your home. While it may seem like a simple enough task, there are some interior decorating mistakes you need to consider before picking up a paint brush.

In this article, we focus on some of the most common interior decorating mistakes:

  • Room size and paint colour choices
  • Furniture and how you use the room
  • Texture and patterns

Interior Decorating Mistakes - How to Avoid

Size of Your Room & Paint Colour

One of the most common interior decorating mistakes you can make is underestimating the size of your room and how your chosen paint colour will impact the size of the room.

Choose a paint colour that’s too dark and you run the risk of making a small room appear even smaller. This is also the case if you choose a paint colour that is too light, like a stark white.

Furniture & Room Use

The key is balancing the colour of your walls with your furnitureand also considering how you use the room.

If you aren’t prepared to change all your furniture to accommodate your paint choice – which can be even more costly than hiring professional painters – consider the furniture you already have and balance that with your paint colour.

Dark paint choices with bulky furniture can be claustrophobic whereas stark paint colours and minimalist furniture may be too sterile.

Taking Texture/Patterns Too Far

When using textures or patterns, less is more. A feature wall with an unusual pattern or texture can make a huge impact on a room, but if you take it too far, it can ruin your high-end look. Like most paint colours, textures and patterns can be very subjective, so if you’re painting for resale, you might want to consult a professional beforehand.

Professional painters are skilled at applying textures and patterns, so if you’re considering this option, sometimes it’s best left to the professionals

Know Your Limits

As with any painting job, know your limits. While you might think you’ll save money with DIY, the opposite may actually be the case when it comes to any of these interior decorating mistakes. Never be afraid to ask for help if a paint job becomes too big for your skills. It’s why professional Perth painters like us exist.
